April 27, 2025

Summer is a time for fresh air and sunshine, but elderly skin needs extra care! Thinner, more delicate skin means a greater risk for sunburn, dehydration, and heat-related illnesses. Here’s how to stay safe:
Use Sunscreen Daily:
• Broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher
• Reapply every 2 hours, or after sweating or swimming
Wear Protective Clothing:
• Lightweight, long-sleeve shirts and pants
• Wide-brimmed hats and UV-blocking sunglasses
Seek Shade During Peak Hours:
• Stay indoors or under shade between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when the sun is strongest
Stay Hydrated:
• Drink water regularly, even if you don’t feel thirsty
• Avoid alcohol and caffeine which can dehydrate
Monitor Medications:
• Some medications increase sun sensitivity
• Ask your doctor or pharmacist if any of your medications have sun-related side effects
Check the Skin Regularly:
• Look for new spots, changes in moles, or unusual redness
• Report any changes to a healthcare provider immediately
Remember:
Even a short time outside can cause harm without proper protection. A few small steps can make summer safe, comfortable, and fun!
